Abeokuta was the first independent State in Nigeria. Local Government Administration first started in Abeokuta, and it compromises four sections.
Abeokuta South Local Government is usually referred to as the Premier Local Government, owing to the historic eminence of that geographical entity as the traditional seat of the Local or Native Authority in Egba since 1898 as well as the seat of the Government of Ogun State that came into existence in 1976.
Also, Abeokuta Local Government, with its headquaters at Ake, was one of the 301 Local Governments created and which had their elected councils inaguranted in January, 1977.
However, in September, 1991, General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida Adminstration created the Abeokuta South Local Government with its headquarters at Ake and the Abeokuta North Local Government, with its headquarters at Akomoje. Abeokuta South Local Government,is mainly inhabited by the Egba Ake stock. The Egba Alake is made of Egba Eku, Egba Aarin and Egba Agbeyin.
In the developing centuries moneybag politics set in the local government with desperate politicians. Straight up to year 90's and 2000's we have heard of money bag politicians who want to attain the position with all their have, having the primary and secondary beliefs that their is nothing money cannot do.
In the year 2024 As Local Government Chairmanship Election Approaches, same trend comtinues in Abeokuta South Local Government party level of All Progressives Congress, APC. The forthcoming battle which looks as if it's a moneybag politics, Abeokuta South people has been caged under some selfish leaders whose their respective languages is “Money” before an aspirant can be picked as candidate.
According to a Party faithful who pleaded on anonymity because of the fear of suspension, expelling from the ruling party APC. revealed to AMEBO NEWSPAPERS NG. that aspirant their is a particular aspirant from ward 13 who has been roaming about with ghana must Go bag, dolling out cash to some leaders in Abeokuta South to buy the mandate at all cost
He said that some leaders received as much as Twenty Five Million Naira, N25million, while some received Ten Million Naira cash N10million, and some received Seven Million Naira N7Million,Two Million Naira 2million, the lowest was Five hundred thousand naira 500,000 from the Aspirant from Ward 13 to buy the mandate at all cost, Information has it that the aspirant is number one on APC list of candidates in Abeokuta South as we write.
The aspirant contested for house of Representative in the last election, and the ticket was later given to another aspirant to contest the seat in the 2023 general election.
In what looks like the choice and voices of the people of Abeokuta South presently is been suppressed in the name of money, and the leaders in charge of these brouhaha are the same leaders who made the last local government chairman failed woefully in the last general election.
And again, these same leaders by the same of attitude and character gave the immediate failed administration to the people of Abeokuta South which they are regretting and not repenting of.
Solution to these menace...
We hope that in the forthcoming local government election, the voice and the will of the indigenous people of Abeokuta South will be given priority and grossly considered by giving them the candidate of their choice who is known, tested and trusted by the common people on Abeokuta South, We are hereby calling on the highest authority to look into this before it gets out of hands.
Law Enforcement Agencies, Police, DSS, EFCC, ICPC should be at alert on what is going on in Abeokuta South Local Government party
In conclusion, Abeokuta South as the premier local government and the first local government in the history in the whole Nigeria to be granted independence should not be in the cage in the purse of some selfish leaders.
